Overview
Highways England were improving a 20 miles (32 km) stretch of the M6 motorway between Junction 16 (Crewe) and Junction 19 (Knutsford) by converting the existing motorway into an “All Lane Running” Smart Motorway.Project
Summary
At the beginning of 2016, EJ were approached by Carillion Kier JV who were looking for a solution to enhance the security and accessibility of the access points for the motorway communications cabling alongside reducing manual handling risks. The covers were to be installed by the side of the overhead gantries, over chambers that contained sensitive cables which powered the signs on the gantries.

Due to the importance and size of this type of project EJ had to pass various stages to become an approved supplier. The first stage involved inviting the contractors and specifiers to our UK head office to showcase our extensive product range and the various product options we could offer.
Carillion Kier JV and the client decided that the GARRISON™ Flush LPCB torsion assisted cover was the perfect option, due the proven security credentials and manual handling benefits. The opening orientation of the GARRISON™ also provided 3 sided access to the chambers which helped reduce the overall size of the surrounding slab, which was welcomed due to verge width constraints.3D CAD models were created alongside 2 product samples for installation at one of the test sites to asses how it performed. The covers successfully passed the trials and the covers are currently being installed along the new motorway.
