RAAF Base Edinburgh, constructed in 1955 and located 25 km north of Adelaide, was built as an adjunct weapons development facility to the joint UK-Australian Weapons Research Establishment at Woomera. This RAAF base is now home to No 92 Wing AP-3C Orion and No 1 Remote Sensing Unit, which operates the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) and Space Surveillance systems at the Air Warfare Centre. It’s also home to 3,500 personnel from the Australian Army, Royal Australian Airforce, as well as key defence supply companies, including BAE Systems Australia, Raytheon Australia and Airbus Group Australia Pacific.
Being an airport project, the frequently heavy aircraft wheel loads require the most robust EJ products, rated to the highest loadings tests under Australian Standard AS3996; tested to Class G 900kN to best simulate the force of a heavy aircraft wheel onto a manhole cover.
EJ machined covers are designed to be non-rocking in their frames with precision machined drawcut and undercut matching profiles. In addition, our cellular frames are designed to lock and anchor the assembly into the surrounding concrete structures for decades of maintenance free service. Our covers also feature Australian Standard non-rotating lifting keyholes for safe lifting and removal with industry standard lifting keys.
Cast in Ductile Iron (SG Iron) to Grade 500/7 (AS1831), covers are available in concrete infill or non-slip solid top designs. Covers can be further enhanced with custom insignias, logos and badging to identify facility owners or just for type of service identification, e.g. electrical or stormwater, and so on.
Additionally, EJ ductile iron sump and trench grates are the superior choice for airport and port projects. Cast as a solid, one piece construction, there are no welds to break or twist under load and stress conditions. Cast grating is the long-lasting solution for high impact loading environments.
All of these EJ infrastructure products complete the underground services at the reinvented Edinburgh RAAF Base. But Edinburgh Base is not the only defence force installation that is well branded EJ in its underground infrastructure. In Asia Pacific, three key RAAF Bases including Amberley, Queensland, Williamtown and Richmond, both in New South Wales, and the Australian Army Aviation Centre at Oakey, Queensland are all EJ covered and stormwater drained.
Our dedicated Airports and Ports team is available throughout Australia and the Pacific region to assist airport and seaport authorities, consultants and contractors during the specification, construction and operation phases. EJ is proud of its 135 years of experience and expertise across the ever-growing Airports and Ports sector. EJ offers an extensive range of globally manufactured product that guarantees the highest quality to meet the unique demands of airport and port construction projects.
